Peter Bruce has extensive experience in executive positions primarily in the public sector. He has been working in increasingly complex and interesting VP/ADM/CIO/CTO roles since 1997 when he became the Chief Information Officer for the Federal Department of Justice. He retired at the end of 2016 from the position of Senior Assistant Deputy Minister for the Strategy Branch at SSC. While he makes a broad strategic contribution, the focus of his public service career has been improving government programs, services and operations through effective use of information technology. This has been achieved by aligning a portfolio of investments with the Government’s strategy and leading the portfolio to successful completion.
Mr. Bruce has extensive experience collaborating internationally, working across Canadian jurisdictions, working closely with the private sector and in leading nonprofit and charitable organizations. He has been a member of the executive or advisory boards for the International CIO Council (ICA), the Canadian Public Sector CIO Council (PSCIOC), the Association of Public Sector Information Professionals (DPI) and the Canadian Federal CIO Council (CIOC). His contribution has been recognized with a variety of distinguished service, fellowship and life member awards as well as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.
Before joining the public sector, Mr. Bruce worked in the hospitality industry ensuring great client service and a positive bottom line at restaurants across Canada and the United States. This contributed to a strong service orientation and provided early leadership experience in the private sector.
Academic achievements include an undergraduate degree in Computer Science (BSc) from the University of Ottawa and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Queen’s University. Mr. Bruce has also studied cognitive science and continues to explore leadership and the transformational possibilities created by advances in information technology.
